The Spring/Summer '23 and '24 runways were ripe with nostalgia, as pixelated fashions reminiscent of early video games took center stage from Louis Vuitton to Loewe. The retro graphics offer lo-fi appeal harking back to the icons that artist and designer Susan Kare originally created for Apple's Macintosh computer. "When Kare was designing those icons for Apple, she was working at the individual pixel level out of necessity - there was simply no other way to draw digitally at the time. That designers are still channeling this style suggests it has an intrinsic aesthetic and emotional appeal," says Adam Wray in his article titled "Hip to be Square" for FT Weekend. "Pixelation has remained at the forefront of popular culture thanks in part to massively popular video games such as Minecraft," notes Wray, who expects that we'll be seeing a lot more of the trend in years to come. From contemporary art to streetwear fashions, the look of the moment is decidedly back to the future.
